KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Thursday forecast second spell of winter showers in Karachi from the first week of January.
Sardar Sarfaraz, chief meteorologist at the Met department, said that Karachi is expected to receive a second spell of rain January 5 to 6, 2022. He said moderate to heavy rainfall was expected with thunder and lightning due to a new westerly system.
According to the chief meteorologist the new system — more powerful than the previous — would enter the country via Balochistan on December 31. “Drizzling and showers are expected in the city from Jan 4 under the system,” Sarfaraz added.
Sardar Sarfaraz further said that cold winds are likely to persist in the city till January 3 while the minimum temperature in the city is expected to remain in the range of 10-12°C.
The city experienced its first spell of winter showers on Monday, with various areas receiving light and moderate showers throughout the day. The rain spell brought with it a wave of cold weather to Karachi.
According to a fresh forecast issued by the Met department, Quaidabad and Gulshan-i-Hadeed received the highest rainfall at 5millimetres each. Surjani Town received the next highest level at 4.5mm, while 4mm rain was recorded at Kemari and PAF Masroor Base. University Road received 3.8mm rainfall, Jinnah Terminal 3.4mm, North Karachi 3.2mm.
