RANCHI, India: Joe Root came to England’s rescue with a splendid century on the opening day of the fourth test against India, steering the visitors to a commendable 302-7 despite early setbacks caused by Akash Deep’s early wickets.
Responding to criticism of England’s aggressive batting style, dubbed ‘Bazball’, following their heavy defeat by 434 runs in the third test, Root’s unbeaten 106 not out revived England’s fortunes from a precarious 112-5 at lunchtime.
Root’s dismissal in Rajkot, attempting a reverse scoop against Jasprit Bumrah, was seen as emblematic of England’s batting woes. Ollie Robinson also contributed with an unbeaten 31, easing the pressure on Ben Stokes, who regretted opting to bat first as England lost their top-order batsmen in a frenzied opening session.
With the hosts leading 2-1 in the five-match series, they rested pace spearhead Bumrah, giving Akash Deep the opportunity to debut. The right-arm seamer made an immediate impact, initially dismissing Zak Crawley, although his joy was short-lived when his delivery was ruled a no-ball. Nonetheless, Akash quickly regained composure, claiming two wickets in three balls. He got Ben Duckett caught behind for 11 with a well-directed delivery, displaying visible elation after confirming it was a legitimate dismissal.
