ISLAMABAD: The government of Japan has provided grant assistance in the form of 29 special vehicles and equipment for Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) worth 500 million Japanese Yen.
The grant has been provided under the Economic and Social Development Programme. Secretary Ministry of Economic Affairs Noor Ahmed and Ambassador of Japan Mr Kuninori Matsuda signed the exchange notes on behalf of their respective governments.
Secretary EAD expressed that Pakistan values bilateral and friendly relations with Japan and Japanese economic assistance have played a vital role in the socio-economic uplift of Pakistan.
He thanked the Japanese government and highlighted that the grant assistance in the form of equipment for MCI is well-timed keeping in view the needs of the municipality.
He said the equipment will enhance the capability of MCI for safe collection and transportation of solid waste on a daily basis. The machinery shall also increase the capacity of MCI to address the challenges of sanitation arising out of rapid urbanization.
The Japanese envoy offered to provide similar assistance for management and transportation of garbage and solid waste for Karachi. He secretary appreciated support for help Karachi being the worst hit during monsoon rainfall.
The ambassador also expressed interest in helping Pakistan regarding disaster management, floods and earthquakes especially during the impeding threat of floods in the Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Secretary EAD appreciated the government and the people of Japan for their support and assured facilitate more meaningful cooperation between the two sides in future.
