ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has released the preliminary delimitation for the upcoming Local Government (LG) elections in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT). The list includes 125 union councils, 650 general wards, and 250 women’s wards.
The ECP’s release of the preliminary delimitation for the LG elections marks an important step in the lead-up to the elections. The public has already been encouraged to participate in the process by submitting their objections or suggestions during the given period.
According to the announcement now available in public domain, the public has been given a 15-day period, from May 8 to May 22, to submit their objections or suggestions regarding the preliminary list. The final list of union councils and wards is scheduled to be published on June 9, 2023.
Meanwhile in a separate development, the National Assembly was informed on Monday that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) would not be used in the upcoming general elections in the light of the newly-passed clause of the Election Act Section 103.
In response to a written question, the house was told that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has evaluated different EVM machines and was in the process of conducting pilot testing soon. However, the machines would not be used in the next general elections.
The National Assembly was also informed that 397 persons were appointed in the ECP during 2018-2021. The breakup showed that 18 persons were recruited in 2018, 188 in 2019, 55 in 2020, and 136 in 2021.
