The latest report from The Information suggests that Apple is in the process of testing a new camera-centric button intended for inclusion in the upcoming iPhone 16 release.
Positioned on the lower right side of the device, beneath the index finger during landscape photography and video capture, the button is rumored to be both mechanical and equipped with additional capacitive features. This combination enables touch- and pressure-sensitive functionalities, allowing users to swipe for zoom control and apply light pressure to set focus on a subject.
Rumors about this camera button have circulated since at least September, with MacRumors initially reporting on its development. While MacRumors mentioned a capacitive button, The Information claims it will be mechanical but with integrated capacitive elements. Both sources indicate that the button is undergoing testing for potential inclusion across the entire iPhone 16 lineup, spanning regular and Pro models. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also discussed the prospect of this new camera button in his reports.
If this camera button becomes a reality, it would mark the second introduction of a new button on the iPhone in consecutive years. The previous year saw the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max featuring a new mechanical Action Button, replacing the traditional mute switch on the left side. While the Action Button could be programmed for photography, its primary purpose is a general-purpose shortcut, altering default ringer settings. There are also speculations, as reported by MacRumors, that the Action Button might transition to a capacitive form this year.
While other smartphone manufacturers, such as Sony with its Xperia devices, have long included dedicated camera buttons, this would be a notable addition to one of the world’s most popular smartphones. Apple surpassed Samsung in global smartphone shipments last year, according to reports. However, it’s crucial to note that even though Apple is currently testing this feature, its plans for the iPhone 16 lineup could undergo changes before the official announcement in September. Previous reports had suggested potential replacements for the iPhone’s mechanical power and volume buttons with capacitive alternatives, but these plans were allegedly abandoned after failing to meet Apple’s quality standards.
