Instagram has finally unveiled its most anticipated feature: the ability to edit messages. While Meta’s WhatsApp has long provided users with the ability to edit sent messages, Instagram users have eagerly awaited this functionality.
Mark Zuckerberg announced the availability of this feature on Monday, along with another forthcoming feature resembling WhatsApp’s pin chat function.
Announcing the update on the Meta Channel on Instagram, Zuckerberg hailed the new edit feature as a ‘game changer’. This feature allows Instagram users to edit their sent messages within a 15-minute window. Previously, the only recourse for correcting a mistake in a sent Instagram message was to unsend or delete the entire message.
To edit a sent DM on Instagram, users can press and hold the message and select “edit” from the dropdown menu. Similar to WhatsApp, the edited message will feature a small “Edited” label beneath it, alerting both sender and recipient to the modification. However, recipients will not have access to edit history.
In addition to the edit message feature, another significant update coming soon to Instagram DMs is the ability to pin chats. Instagram will allow users to ‘Pin Chats to Top of Inbox’, akin to WhatsApp. Users will be able to pin up to three groups or 1:1 chats for easy access.
While the rollout of this feature may take some time, users will eventually be able to move a chat to the top of their inbox by swiping left or tapping and holding on the chat, then selecting “pin”. They can also opt to unpin a thread at any time.
But that’s not all. Alongside the edit message and pin chats features, Instagram now offers additional capabilities including a Read Receipts Toggle. Users can choose to enable or disable read receipts for all their chats or specific ones, with the ability to adjust this setting anytime through their account settings.
