Indonesia has introduced a significant new initiative for individuals seeking residency rights by launching the Global Citizenship of Indonesia programme, under which applications are now being accepted.

According to foreign media reports, the scheme will allow former Indonesian nationals and individuals connected to them to live and work in the country on an indefinite basis.

While Indonesia does not permit dual citizenship, the government has decided to offer a special residency status for people of Indonesian origin as an alternative to this restriction.

The primary objective of the initiative is to reconnect members of the Indonesian diaspora living abroad with their homeland.

Reports indicate that the programme will officially come into effect on 26 January 2026, and at least five individuals have already completed the registration process.

Eddy Eko Putranto, Director General of Residential Permits, stated that applications received so far are currently under review to assess applicants’ eligibility.

Those eligible under the programme include former Indonesian citizens, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition, foreign spouses of Indonesian citizens and children born to one Indonesian and one foreign parent may also apply.

However, the government has clarified that the facility will not be extended to foreign nationals from countries that were previously part of Indonesia or to individuals linked to separatist activities.

Similarly, applicants who have served as government officials, intelligence officers or military personnel in another country have been declared ineligible.
