ISLAMABAD: A two-member Islamabad High Court (IHC) bench will consist of Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani and Justice Aamir Farooq. The Judges will hear the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s appeal against Al-Azizia case verdict on September 18.
Sharif’s defense team leading by Khawaja Haris will present their arguments on the statement of former judge Arshad Malik. Sharif’s lawyers have also prepared a petition, which will seek suspension of his sentence and plead for releasing him on bail till the hearing of the main case.
The former Prime Minister was convicted in Al Azizia reference by the accountability court’s judge Arshad Malik. The verdict announced by the Justice Arshad Malik convicted Nawaz Sharif, he was jailed for seven years and fined Rs. 5 billion.
However, the case took a turn when Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, released the video of Justice Arshad Malik, in which he confessed that he announced the verdict under duress.
On the other hand, The accountability court’s judge Justice Arshad Malik denied the charges in an affidavit. Later, the judge was removed from his position.
Sharif is currently serving a jail term of 7-years at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore on being proven guilty in Al-Azizia reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
