LONDON: British-Pakistani entrepreneur Shafiq Akbar has been honoured at the UK Parliament for his significant contributions to Pakistan’s economy, including job creation, real estate investment, and the empowerment of overseas Pakistanis.

The recognition ceremony, held at the House of Lords, was led by Lord Shaffaq Mohammed, Baron Mohammed of Tinsley. Lord Shaffaq presented Akbar with a prestigious achievement award in acknowledgment of his role in creating thousands of jobs in Pakistan, spearheading the digital transformation of the real estate sector, and launching major development projects — including Islamabad’s new downtown and four Marriott Hotels.

Lord Shaffaq praised Akbar as a visionary leader: “Shafiq Akbar exemplifies what can be achieved when ambition is rooted in purpose. His work is a testament to what the UK and Pakistan can accomplish together.”

Born and raised in Pakistan, Akbar pursued higher education in the UK, graduating from Queen Mary University and completing an MPhil at Cambridge University. He went on to build a successful career in financial advisory and real estate investment before returning to Pakistan after 15 years abroad.

Lord Shaffaq highlighted Akbar’s dual impact at home and abroad: “From the UK to Pakistan, Akbar has shown a profound commitment to public service through enterprise. He has empowered thousands, digitised the property sector, and fostered meaningful engagement between governments, academia, and civil society. He is a builder of bridges — a cultural envoy, an economic diplomat, and a visionary committed to transnational progress.”

In his acceptance speech, Akbar shared the deeper meaning behind the honour:

“This award is more than personal recognition — it’s a celebration of connection: between the UK and Pakistan, between diaspora identity and service to home, and between vision and real-world results.”

He encouraged overseas Pakistanis to play an active role in the country’s development:

“We all want to see meaningful progress in Pakistan. Overseas Pakistanis bring global perspective and experience — we must be part of leading that change. With smart policies, tech-driven solutions, and our nation’s untapped potential, we can confront our biggest challenges and build sustainable industries.”
