Hundreds of people are feared dead after migrant boats sank near the Malaysia–Thailand border, while one death has been confirmed, according to international media reports.
According to the Malaysian Maritime Authority, the boat capsized three days ago, resulting in one confirmed death and 300 people missing, while 10 individuals have been rescued.
According to a news agency report, the boat was carrying migrants from Myanmar, the Rohingya community, and Bangladesh, while reports suggest that two other boats are also missing.
The report added that more than 300 people bound for Malaysia were initially aboard a large vessel and were later transferred to three smaller boats, each carrying about 100 people. A rescue operation is underway to search for the survivors.
It is worth mentioning that in the past, migrants from several developing and underdeveloped countries — including Pakistan and India — have died while attempting to travel abroad on similar boats.
