The three-day Basant festival is set to kick off in Lahore from February 6, following the Punjab government’s decision to lift a ban on the historic event after 18 years, with strict regulations.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a “long weekend” in the province, declaring a “provincial Basant holiday on the 6th, followed by Saturday and Sunday ”.

With Basant revived in 2026 (February 6–8 in Lahore under strict safety rules), here’s your complete beginner’s guide to flying a kite safely and successfully.

Step-by-Step Guide to Flying a Kite

Pick a day with steady, moderate wind (5–25 km/h—enough to lift but not too gusty). Avoid stormy weather. An open space like a park, field, or (for Basant) a safe rooftop is ideal, with no trees, power lines, buildings, or airports nearby.

Assemble Your Kite

Most Basant kites are simple, diamond-shaped, single-line ones. Ensure the frame is intact, the bridle (the strings attaching the flying line) is properly tied, and the tail (if any) is attached for stability.

Position Yourself

Stand with your back to the wind. This lets the breeze push the kite forward. Have a friend hold the kite facing into the wind, or prop it up if alone.

Launch the Kite

Hold the spool or handle. Let out some line (10–20 meters). Your friend releases the kite upward as you walk backward or pull gently. Let the wind catch it—don’t yank hard.

Ascend and Control

Let out more line smoothly while keeping slight tension. If it dips, pull the line gently to lift it or run forward to give slack. Tug short pulls to steer or stabilize.

Fly and Battle (Basant Style)

In Punjab’s competitive spirit, maneuver to cut others’ strings with controlled pulls and angles. Shout “bo kata!” when you win!

Basant-Specific Tips (Lahore 2026 Edition)

Use Approved Gear Only

Buy kites and strings from licensed sellers with QR codes. Avoid banned sharp/chemical-coated “manjha” (glass-coated strings); they’re illegal due to injury risks.

Safety First

Fly only on approved, covered rooftops (no overcrowded or weak ones). Wear gloves to protect hands. Motorcyclists must use neck safety wire/helmets. Stay away from power lines, roads, airports, and no-fly zones; drones and police enforce this.

Supervise Kids

Never leave children unsupervised on rooftops.

Clean Up

Collect fallen kites/debris to protect birds and animals.
