How a fake case in Lahore falls apart in one hearing

LAHORE: A criminal case registered by Model Town Division Police against five individuals — including Cricket Association officials and an assistant director of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) — was discharged by a local court within 24 hours after police failed to produce any evidence to support the allegations.

According to local journalist Imran Shafqat, the FIR was lodged on the recommendation of a senior officer and accused the five of using fake number plates. The complaint stemmed from allegations that the brother of former CPO Rawalpindi Khalid Hamdani was not selected by cricket officials. Among those named in the case was an assistant director of NCCIA.

When the matter came before the court, police could not present any CCTV footage or other material evidence referenced in the FIR. With the prosecution unable to substantiate the charges, the court discharged all accused the very next day, citing the case as baseless.

Political Reprimand Surfaces
Imran Shafqat further reported that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi directly contacted DIG Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran and former CPO Rawalpindi Khalid Hamdani regarding the matter.

“I know you’re doing all this on whose orders, refrain from such matters,” Naqvi was quoted as telling DIG Faisal Kamran, in what Shafqat described as a reprimand.

The rapid collapse of the case has drawn attention to concerns of nepotism and misuse of police authority. Legal observers note that FIRs filed without corroborating evidence — particularly CCTV footage in cases involving vehicle allegations — rarely withstand judicial scrutiny.

The incident also highlights as to how quickly cases lacking evidentiary basis can fall apart in the court of law. Within a single hearing, the court found no grounds to proceed and discharged all five individuals.
