KARACHI: The Feerozabad Police have arrested an elderly man, identified as Muhammad Mangi, for his alleged role as a strategist and lookout for an organized criminal gang targeting bank customers.
According to police officials, Mangi operated a sophisticated “spotting” system. He would frequent various banks, identifying citizens who withdrew large sums of cash. Once a target was identified, Mangi would relay the information to a four-member gang, who would then intercept and rob the victims outside the premises.
To evade law enforcement and avoid raising suspicion among bank staff and security, the suspect reportedly disguised himself as a harmless elderly citizen, allowing him to blend into crowds unnoticed while monitoring transactions.
Investigations revealed the gang’s history of high-profile targets, including a brazen robbery two years ago in which they targeted a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), stealing Rs 800,000. Police confirmed that CCTV footage from multiple incidents has been obtained, providing critical evidence against the group.
During interrogation, Mangi confessed to his involvement in several robbery incidents. Police further disclosed that the suspect has a prior criminal record and was allegedly involved in a murder case stemming from a previous robbery.
A formal case has been registered against the suspect. Law enforcement agencies are currently conducting raids across the city to apprehend the remaining accomplices who remain at large.
