Religious scholar Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman has clarified that he has not issued a definitive religious ruling declaring cryptocurrency either permissible or impermissible under Islamic law, adding that gold trading is wrong.
Speaking in a recent interview, he said Muslims should invest only in businesses that comply with Shariah principles and avoid ventures involving prohibited activities. While discussing Islamic investment practices, he also expressed reservations about gold trading, saying gold trading is wrong.
His remarks come after leading Islamic scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani ruled that using cryptocurrency to purchase goods is “impermissible.” The ruling cited research indicating that cryptocurrencies do not meet the Islamic legal definition of “wealth.”
The fatwa was issued by Darul Ifta at Jamia Darul Uloom Karachi and is dated 24 Zilhaj 1447 AH (June 10, 2026).
In addition to Mufti Taqi Usmani, the ruling was endorsed by five other prominent Islamic scholars.
