Hansal Mehta: Box Office numbers shouldn’t judge films

MUMBAI: Filmmaker Hansal Mehta believes that a movie’s success at the box office shouldn’t be the sole indicator of its quality. The director of acclaimed films such as Faraaz, Aligarh, and Citylights made this point clear in a recent statement. Mehta argued that even terrible movies can make a lot of money, which doesn’t necessarily mean they are good films.

According to Mehta, the audience should focus on their experience of films rather than fixating on their box office collections, which is “nobody’s business.” Mehta is known for his hard-hitting socio-political dramas, and he requested people to “stop judging” a film by the money it mints at the box office.

The filmmaker’s comments came in response to a tweet by a trade analyst who had highlighted the difference between a producer’s figure and that of the trade. Mehta further added that a film’s box-office collections impact only those involved in the film in various ways that are purely transactional and essentially private.

Reminding that a film’s box office numbers should not be the only metric by which it is judged, Mehta said instead the audience should focus on their personal experience and the artistic merit of the film.

Bottom Line :
A films box-office is nobody’s business. It impacts ONLY those involved in the film in various ways that are purely transactional and essentially private.

STOP JUDGING FILMS BY B-O NUMBERS. Terrible films sometimes make a lot of money and good films make less… https://t.co/f4quG4xxcR

He wrote “STOP JUDGING FILMS BY B-O NUMBERS. Terrible films sometimes make a lot of money and good films make less money. Focus on your experience of the film as an audience and not on the film’s collections. Focus on whether the film was worth the price of your ticket not on whether the price of the film star should go up or down.”
