The prime minister has divulged more details of a threatening letter which he claimed was a foreign conspiracy to overthrow his government. The contents of the letter were shown before the cabinet, handpicked journalists, and will be presented before an in-camera session of parliament, to allay concerns by the opposition that the letter was fabricated.
This letter is in fact a diplomatic cable which Pakistan’s ambassador to US sent to the prime minister over the threatening tone of foreign officials displeased with Pakistan’s policies. The prime minister’s recent visit to Moscow and the stance on Russia-Ukraine conflict has earned the ire of Western nations.
More importantly, the no-confidence motion has been mentioned and Pakistan has been warned of severe consequences if it fails. The talk of regime change in Pakistan has been credence to the prime minister’s claims there is a foreign conspiracy to oust him from power and the opposition is playing in the hands of the conspirators.
The prime minister’s decision to share the letter has also subsided opposition’s claims the letter was fake or an attempt to gain public sympathy for the embattled leader. These rumours will be further laid to rest when it is presented to the NSC or parliament. However, it doesn’t imply that the prime minister is safe and remains in power.
The prime minister suffered a blow when the MQM decided to part ways and side with the opposition. The PTI seems to have lost the majority and is certain to lose the no-trust motion. The government seems unperturbed and maintains things are under control. The prime minister has refused to quit and the matter will certainly be settled in parliament.
PM Imran Khan insists he is part of a conspiracy for having an independent foreign policy. The decision to deny US military bases, strengthen ties with China and join the Russia bloc are seen as the main reasons. These claims have drawn parallels to Z.A. Bhutto who was unceremoniously ousted from power in a coup but may not provide the same exalted status. Pakistan once again stands at crossheads as it writes another chapter in its chequered history.
