Flash flood triggered by glacial burst kills dozens of cattle in Diamer

GILGIT: A glacier burst in Bonar Nala of Diamer’s Chilas area triggered a sudden flood overnight, killing dozens of cattle and causing significant financial losses to local residents, officials and local sources said.

The sudden surge of water spread panic among communities living near the affected area as floodwater swept through the valley. 

Police said dozens of cattle died in the incident, while efforts were underway to locate livestock affected by the flood.

Glacier burst raises fresh concerns in Diamer

The incident has heightened concerns among residents as dangerous cracks have also appeared in a glacier in the Karliugah area of Diamer’s Nayat Valley.

According to local sources, part of the glacier was damaged following the glacier burst and subsequent flood surge. 

The event reportedly resulted in the formation of an artificial lake, raising fears of another potentially dangerous outburst.

Residents have expressed concern over the possible impact of further glacier movement and flooding on lives, homes and livestock in the area.

The development comes amid heightened vulnerability in Gilgit-Baltistan, where rising temperatures, rapid glacier melt, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and landslides have disrupted road links and affected communities during the ongoing monsoon season.

GB government orders assistance for affected families

Taking notice of the incident, Gilgit-Baltistan Home Minister directed the district administration to provide all possible financial and other assistance to families affected by the flood.

The minister also ordered authorities to assess the damage caused by the incident and extend full assistance to those affected.

Meanwhile, local authorities and police continue to monitor the situation, while the search for livestock swept away or affected by the sudden flood remains underway.

Residents in vulnerable mountainous areas have been urged to remain alert and follow instructions from the administration, particularly as further glacier movement, flash floods and landslides can occur with little warning.
