ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced a major nationwide crackdown against non-filers who display lavish lifestyles on social media, officials said.

According to details, the FBR has completed preparations for a large-scale operation targeting individuals who showcase luxury cars, motorcycles, yachts, bungalows, flats, farmhouses, branded clothing, expensive jewellery and luxury watches online but do not file tax returns.

Sources said that from July 1 to September 30, special FBR teams will closely monitor social media activity to identify individuals living high-profile lifestyles without appearing in the tax net. Data collection will reportedly include spending patterns, credit and ATM card usage, and foreign travel records.

Officials said lists of such individuals will be compiled, and tax notices will be issued to those found displaying wealth on social media while remaining non-filers.

The crackdown will also cover individuals posting content from weddings, music events, Qawwali gatherings and other celebrations where large amounts of cash are displayed or thrown, sources added.

FBR officials said the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has provided assistance in verifying identities, enabling access to financial and travel-related information of suspected individuals.

Authorities confirmed that enforcement actions will begin from October 1, with a final deadline of September 30 for filing income tax returns. They added that no extension will be granted beyond the deadline.
