KARACHI: At least eight people, including two children, were killed and four others injured in separate traffic accidents across Karachi during the past 24 hours, according to rescue officials.
One person was killed after being struck by a vehicle near the Soldier Bazaar stop. In another incident at Korangi Crossing, a five-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle.
Two motorcyclists lost their lives after an unidentified vehicle struck their motorcycle on Malir Jinnah Avenue. Meanwhile, one person was killed and three others injured when two motorcycles collided near Ayesha Manzil.
A water-tanker driver died after his vehicle collided with a trailer on the Baldia Northern Bypass. Near Port Qasim, an 11-year-old pedestrian was killed after being hit by a trailer. Separately, a 30-year-old man was injured after being struck by a motorcycle on Baldia Hub River Road.
Rescue officials said 603 people have been killed and 7,467 injured in traffic accidents across Karachi since the beginning of the year. The fatalities include 463 men, 73 women and 67 children, while the injured comprise 5,649 men, 1,322 women and 496 children.
Heavy vehicles have been involved in 184 fatal accidents this year. Official statistics show that 12 people were killed in collisions with dumpers, 84 in trailer-related accidents, 46 in water-tanker crashes, 18 in collisions involving mini-trucks and 24 in bus-related accidents.
The incident-wise details provided by rescue officials account for seven fatalities, while the overall toll reported for the past 24 hours is eight.
