KARACHI: There are only 179 ventilators at public sector hospitals across Sindh and several of them are not functional as the province faces a rising number of cases amid the coronavirus pandemic.
This has been revealed after the figures were shared by doctors, paramedic staff and several members of the health department. There has been a shortage of ventilators in both public and private sectors hospitals in Karachi, raising alarm bells over the dire health situation across the province.
There are 179 ventilators in the province, 25 of them are portable, while dozens are not portable. According to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Executive Director Seemi Jamali, there are 43 ventilators at the hospital while they have requested the Sindh government to provide twenty more ventilators.
There are only 27 ventilators in Hyderabad, 22 in Jamshoro, 8 in Sukkur, 6 in Tando Muhammad Khan, and two each in Dadu and Thatta. There are 37 ventilators in Khairpur, 12 in Shikarpur, 5 in Larkana, 8 in Naushero and 8 in Shaheed Benazirabad including one portable ventilator.
