If you happen to own decades-old banknotes, you could become a millionaire, as the 100-rupee note issued in 1948 during Pakistan’s early years is now valued in the millions.

According to experts, if the note carries a “small prefix”, meaning a serial number starting with one or two letters, and is preserved in good condition, its value today can reach between 800,000 and 1.2 million rupees.

These rare notes were printed when Pakistan was a newly independent country, and its currency was temporarily managed by the Reserve Bank of India. The notes carried the words “Government of Pakistan” in both Urdu and English, making them historically valuable.

Why is the 1948 note special?

These banknotes were printed soon after independence in very limited quantity. It should be noted that notes with serial numbers beginning with small prefixes like “A” or “AB” are the most valuable while “Uncirculated” notes, free from folds, stains, or tears, can fetch far higher prices.

Decades-Old Rs100 Note Now Valued at Over a Million

Moreover, notes signed by Reserve Bank of India governors such as C.D. Deshmukh or H.V.R. Iengar are highly sought after. Misprints or very low serial numbers (e.g., 000001) command premium prices.

Current Market Value (2025)

  • Circulated notes: Rs. 50,000 – Rs. 150,000
  • Uncirculated notes: Rs. 500,000 – Rs. 800,000
  • Small-prefix or star-mark notes: Rs. 800,000 – Rs. 1,200,000
  • Misprints: Up to Rs. 1,500,000

Experts advise owners to first authenticate their notes through professionals or grading services such as Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) before offering them for sale on online marketplaces like CoinBazzar.com, BidCurios.com, or eBay.

This rare note is considered a priceless piece of Pakistan’s history — a symbol of the nation’s early economy and a “holy grail” for collectors worldwide.
