Who wouldn’t want to live in a city with world-class healthcare, quality education, modern transport, a clean environment, and a peaceful lifestyle? The latest Global Liveability Index 2026 published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) provides an answer, ranking 173 cities worldwide based on their overall quality of life.

According to the report, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, retained its position as the world’s most liveable city for the second consecutive year. The city earned perfect scores for stability, education, and infrastructure, while also performing exceptionally well in culture and environment.

Austria’s Vienna ranked second, followed by Melbourne in Australia, Sydney in fourth place, and Zurich in Switzerland at fifth. The remaining cities in the top 10 are Geneva, Osaka, Adelaide, Vancouver, and Tokyo.

The report also incorporated the views of local residents. Copenhagen residents highlighted the city’s cycling culture, short commute times, and the tradition of swimming in the sea after work. Residents of Vienna praised its efficient public transport system, peaceful lifestyle, and historic charm. People in Melbourne pointed to the city’s multicultural character, café culture, arts, and music scene, while Sydney residents cited its beaches, natural beauty, and diverse community as key attractions.

No city from South Asia made it into the top 10. Karachi remained in 170th place for the second consecutive year, followed by Dhaka in 171st, Tripoli in 172nd, and Damascus, Syria, at the bottom of the rankings in 173rd place.

According to the EIU, the relatively low rankings of South Asian cities are largely due to challenges related to political and economic stability, healthcare, infrastructure, environmental quality, and urban services. The report underscores that a city’s liveability depends not on towering skyscrapers but on safety, quality healthcare and education, efficient transport, clean air, and reliable public services.
