It was a bitterly cold day, with a thick fog. I was at a funeral of a 25-year-old man and the father of a daughter. Later, we found out that the deceased had committed suicide. I was literally shocked. I was forced to think about what would have happened that this young man committed suicide even though he had a daughter.
When I asked my friend in this regard, he told the deceased contracted a love marriage against his family’s will. The deceased was facing severe criticism from his family and was forced to divorce his wife. The boy tried hard to convince his family but failed and so the boy became depressed, resulting in suicide.
Depression is a word we often throw around without realizing the depth of the disease. It is a mental health condition that affects people of all ages in the form of one or recurrent major depressive episodes (MDEs) that can be mild, moderate, or severe.
There is no single cause of depression known — it is a disorder of the brain that occurs due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors working together. It is a frequent mood disorder that is severely disabling and has a significant impact on the everyday life of an individual as well as society at large, including a substantial economic burden on society.
However, in my point of view, the biggest cause of depression is the distance from Almighty Allah and the second one is our relatives. In today’s society, if a person commits suicide, it is due to depression, which is caused by domestic troubles, ridicule and constant harassment.
In this case, we should pay special attention to our own and if someone seems upset, talk to him immediately and find out what is bothering him. Let him know that he is not alone because even a little sympathy can save someone’s life in such a difficult time. Assure the depressed person that no mistake or resentment can end your life.
As we see mental health issues escalating around us, it is essential we explore remedies that can help us out of this misery. As a society, we must break this social stigma of seeking help. It is absolutely normal to have emotional breakdowns at some point in life.
No matter what level of depression you reach, don’t forget that Almighty Allah is with you. Verse n. 129 of Surah At-Tawba says, “But if they turn away, [O Muhammad], say, Sufficient for me is Allah; there is no deity except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.”
Did you forget the patience of Hazrat Ayub (PBUH), did you forget the patience of Hazrat Imam Hussain (S.A.W)? They had their trust in Almighty Allah, so we need to be patient.
