In a surprising and sharply worded social media exchange on Friday, February 20, 2026, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif publicly criticized Hollywood actor David Schwimmer, best known for portraying Ross Geller on the iconic sitcom Friends.

According to reports and online discussions circulating on X (formerly Twitter), Minister Asif reposted content that mocked Schwimmer’s appearance, tying it directly to the actor’s outspoken support for Israel and his efforts against antisemitism.

In his accompanying comment, Asif reportedly wrote something to the effect of “Ugliness is written all over his face,” while referencing his familiarity with Schwimmer from the long-running NBC series.

The minister’s remarks appear to stem from Schwimmer’s prominent pro-Israel advocacy. In March 2025, the actor hosted and spoke at the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) annual “Never Is Now” summit in New York City, where he urged fellow celebrities, particularly those in Hollywood’s Jewish community, to break their silence on rising antisemitism and stand in solidarity with the Jewish people.

During the event, Schwimmer presented the inaugural “Heroes Against Hate” awards, honoring individuals and figures who have actively combated hate, including high-profile honorees such as actress Gal Gadot.

In his remarks at the summit, Schwimmer emphasized the importance of visibility and community strength, stating that “now is not the time to disappear” but rather to connect, reach out, and show pride in standing up against Jewish hate.

The Defence Minister’s post quickly drew mixed reactions online. Some users echoed anti-Israel sentiments and praised Asif’s bluntness, while others condemned the personal attack as unstatesmanlike, hypocritical, or trivializing serious geopolitical issues.

Critics pointed out the irony of a high-ranking Pakistani official engaging in celebrity commentary amid ongoing domestic and regional challenges.

A few online responses even turned the “ugly” label back on Asif or dismissed the exchange as irrelevant to substantive policy discussions.

Asif, a senior figure in Pakistan’s government and a frequent commentator on international affairs, particularly the Israel-Palestine conflict, has a history of strong public positions on Middle East issues.

His comment on Schwimmer fits into a broader pattern of Pakistani officials and public figures voicing criticism of prominent Western personalities perceived as supportive of Israel.
