KARACHI: The Sindh Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has foiled an attempt to smuggle weapons in a passenger bus and apprehended three suspects on Taimuria Sher Shah Suri Road.
According to details provided by the In-Charge of CTD, Chaudhry Safdar, the operation was carried out with the help of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
Chaudhry Safdar said the law enforcement personnel recovered a large cache of weapons including 1 LMG, 69 mm pistol, eight 30-bore and 1-bore pistols, 750 bullets of 9mm and 200 bullets of 30-bores, two large and 14 small pistol magazines. He said that the weapons were likely to be used in terrorist activities.
According to the In-Charge of CTD, a passenger bus was being used to transport weapons from Peshawar to Karachi, and the weapons consignment was being kept hidden in the bus’s secret compartments. The suspects, identified as Wasal Afridi, Yasir Mohmand, and Atta Afridi, were apprehended during the operation.
In a shocking revelation, Safdar said that Sukkur police had also arrested Yasir’s brother a few days ago while he was transporting arms from Peshawar to Sukkur. This indicates a possible network involved in the smuggling of weapons.
“This is the second major operation of the CTD investigation department in recent times,” said Chaudhry Safdar, adding that a case has been registered against the outlawed group in the CTD and further investigation is underway.
CTD Officials said that the law enforcement agencies have stepped up their efforts to curb terrorist activities and smuggling of weapons in the country.
