In a landmark decision, a Karachi court has imposed a hefty fine of Rs19.3 million on K-Electric for its role in the tragic death of a six-year-old boy, Azan, who was electrocuted during the 2017 monsoon rains.
The court’s ruling, which comes after a protracted six-year legal battle, holds the utility company responsible for its negligence in maintaining electrical infrastructure.
The verdict was handed down by Senior Civil Judge East Karachi, Ambreen Jamal, who issued a decree against K-Electric and its officials, ordering them to pay a compensation amount of Rs 19.3 million to the grieving family. The case dates back to the monsoon season of 2017, when Azan was electrocuted after coming into contact with an exposed wire near his home.
Advocate Usman Farooq, who represented the family, expressed his satisfaction with the court’s decision. He stated that the claim was initially filed in 2017, accusing K-Electric of failing to properly secure electrical wires, which led to the tragic incident. “K-Electric’s negligence in guarding wires was clear, and today’s verdict validates our claim for compensation,” Farooq said.
This case highlights ongoing concerns over the safety of Karachi’s electrical infrastructure, particularly during the monsoon season, when exposed wires and other hazards pose significant risks to public safety. The court’s ruling serves as a reminder to K-Electric and other utility providers about their responsibility to ensure the safety and maintenance of their services to prevent further incidents.
The family of Azan, though devastated by the loss, has expressed relief at the court’s decision, hoping that the ruling will bring some justice and prevent future tragedies.
