LAHORE: Renowned journalist and filmmaker Reham Khan, who was once married to former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan, is preparing to return to the film industry with her next Pakistani-Punjabi feature, “Cheema, Chattha, and Bajwa.”
Reham Khan announced a second feature film “Cheema, Chattha and Bajwa” on the “Hafiz Ahmed Podcast”.
Few people know that Reham Khan was the producer of the popular 2016 movie “Janaan.” The film, which featured Armeena Rana Khan, Bilal Ashraf, Ali Rehman Khan, Hania Aamir, and Ajab Gul, was set in the Swat Valley and focused on the issue of child abuse. “Cheema, Chattha, and Bajwa” will spotlight the experiences of Punjabi expatriates residing in countries like Canada and the UK. This theme of Punjabi diaspora living abroad has been a consistent narrative in Indian Punjabi cinema for many years.
Interestingly, Indian Punjabi films have also found success in the Pakistani market. For instance, “Carry on Jatta 3” grossed over PKR 30 Cr in 2023, surpassing the earnings of any Pakistani film released that year.
Reham Khan, involved in the project, asserts her credit as a writer for “Cheema, Chattha, and Bajwa.” Her vision for the film is to showcase the cultural richness of the Pakistani Punjabi diaspora, mirroring the global recognition achieved by their Indian counterparts.
While the storyline is nearing completion, the search for the ideal Pakistani Punjabi protagonist, aged around 26-27, is still underway. Although a specific release date is yet to be announced, “Cheema, Chattha, and Bajwa” is expected to have an international premiere, marking a significant venture for Pakistani cinema.
