February 14 is Valentine’s Day, with timelines full of red hearts, roses popping up in every story, and couples acting like they just remembered each other, and there I am, scrolling through it all like some kind of narrator watching everyone else’s happiness unfold.
So I did what anyone today would do when feeling upset: I started a chat with an AI. And I typed, “Will you be my Valentine?
A moment of quiet…then the reply showed up: “I don’t really have feelings, but I’m here if you want to chat.”
Honestly, that was the most genuine Valentine’s reply I’ve ever come across.
Love in the digital age is different from what it used to be. People meet and connect online more than ever, and messages or likes can mean a lot.
At the same time, it’s easy to misunderstand each other without face-to-face contact.
Despite that, digital love stories are just as real and messy as any other. They come with their own challenges and moments, but they show how people keep changing the way they find and share love.
Nowadays, lots of people have thousands of followers. But there’s no one to message at 2 AM. So now the roles have switched.
Friends, someone to talk to, a therapist at times, and once in a while, a Valentine too are being handed over to software. AI doesn’t disappear on you. It doesn’t leave you hanging. It’s not like it suddenly needs space. It just hangs around.
Maybe what we’re really searching for isn’t love. Maybe what people really want isn’t romance. Sometimes it’s just feeling understood or having someone who’s there without the pressure of love. Maybe it’s just about attention. A reply. A presence that stays and accepts without judgment.
And funny enough, sometimes a machine does that job better than people do. But there was still something missing. The AI didn’t give me a heart. It felt like holding up a mirror to myself. Sometimes, we just don’t need a Valentine. Sometimes, all we really need is someone or something to just listen. And that’s how, on Valentine’s Day, my longest conversation wasn’t with a person; it was with myself.
Sometimes, the talks we have inside our heads take up way more time than any chat with someone else… it happened through an algorithm.
Happy Valentine’s Day—sending love from people to machines. ❤️
