A case has been registered in India against prominent Indian-origin Islamic scholar, researcher, and expert in comparative religion, Mufti Dr Yasir Nadeem Al-Wajidi, over allegations of hurting religious sentiments.
The action was taken following a video that went viral on social media. Mufti Yasir Nadeem Al-Wajidi maintains that his remarks were taken out of context and presented in a misleading manner.
According to Indian media reports, the complainant, Hardar Chaudhary, alleged that during an online academic session, Mufti Yasir Nadeem Al-Wajidi made a comment in response to a question that hurt the sentiments of followers of Hinduism. The question compared idol worship, from the perspective of God, with the crime of assaulting a girl.
Following the complaint, Mangalore Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under various legal provisions. Police station in-charge Lokinder Singh confirmed that the case had been registered and said an investigation was underway. Investigating officer Sandeep Kumar said all available evidence, including the viral video, was being examined.
Mufti Dr Yasir Nadeem Al-Wajidi, however, maintains that a short portion of his remarks was shared on social media in a way that altered their original meaning. According to him, while explaining the Islamic belief regarding shirk, or associating partners with God, he stated that it is considered the gravest sin in Islam. He clarified that this does not mean crimes such as sexual assault are considered minor. He stressed that sexual assault is an extremely serious crime in Islam and carries severe punishment.
Mufti Yasir Nadeem Al-Wajidi conducts weekly live academic sessions on YouTube, where he addresses objections raised against Islam, discusses comparative religion, and explores various intellectual and religious topics in detail. He is currently based in Chicago, United States, and is also the founder and director of an Islamic educational and research institution.
The case has once again raised questions surrounding short-form videos on social media, the importance of context in interpreting statements, and public debate over religious issues. However, the final nature of the case and the legal standing of the allegations will only be determined after the investigation is completed.
