The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced new regulations for foreign individuals interested in working in Canada through the Digital Nomad Visa Programme, as reported by VisaGuide on Friday.
Under these updated rules, foreigners are permitted to enter Canada for remote work as digital nomads, even while holding a visitor visa. Additionally, if successful in securing employment with a Canadian employer, they can obtain a work permit.
These digital nomads will be required to have visitor status, enabling them to relocate to Canada for a duration of up to six months. During this period, they can engage in remote work for an international employer, be self-employed, or provide services to clients outside of Canada.
The IRCC emphasizes that digital nomads expressing interest in working for a Canadian employer should be aware that obtaining a work permit is a prerequisite before commencing work with such an employer.
It’s noteworthy that digital nomads entering Canada are exempted from the requirement of holding additional documents. However, family members of digital nomads intending to work or study in Canada must apply for a separate work permit or study permit.
According to the IRCC, digital nomads are individuals eligible to work remotely from any location worldwide. The government department defines digital nomads as individuals who only need visitor status to stay in Canada for up to six months while engaging in remote work.
