KARACHI: Pakistani actress and model Ayesha Omar has spoken for the first time in years about the controversy surrounding her leaked vacation photos from the beach.
In a recent interview with BBC, Ayesha Omar said she was vacationing in Thailand with her close friend, actress Maria Wasti, when her private photos were leaked.
She said she was wearing a swimsuit in one photo while other photos showed her in summer clothes and skirts. After the photos surfaced, she faced severe criticism and the negative effects also impacted her professional career.
She said at the time many producers prioritized a specific social perception for women, due to which she also missed out on certain work.
Ayesha Omar said sharing private photos without permission is a violation of a person’s privacy and consent. That is why she is now working with an NGO to participate in an awareness campaign against misuse of people’s private data and photos.
Ayesha Omar said the purpose of speaking on the topic after years is not only to tell her story but also to create awareness among people that spreading someone’s private information or photos without their permission is a serious issue that can have far-reaching effects.
