An anti-terrorism court in Lahore has handed down lengthy prison sentences in two cases relating to the issuance of fatwas against former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa.
On Monday, the special anti-terrorism court announced its verdict after completing the trial in both cases.
The court sentenced Maulana Tahir Saifi, a leader of the proscribed Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan, to 32 years’ imprisonment along with a fine of Rs700,000.
In a separate case, the court awarded 36 years in prison and a fine of Rs650,000 to another accused, Riaz.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Shahid Sikandar upon conclusion of the proceedings.
According to the judgment, Maulana Tahir Saifi had issued a fatwa against the former chief justice, leading to a case being registered at A-Division Police Station in Sheikhupura. Meanwhile, a separate case against Riaz had been registered at Changa Manga Police Station in Kasur.
The prosecution had submitted separate charge sheets in both matters prior to the conclusion of the trial.
