PPP lashes out at Centre over ‘failed policies, economic downfall’

MM News Staff by MM News Staff
November 4, 2020

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senior leadership has slammed Prime Minister Imran Khan over failed policies and the worst economic situation in the country.

While addressing a press conformance today  Senator Sherry Rehman who was accompanied by other PPP leaders, lambasted the “incompetent” PTI-led government for “failing miserably everywhere”, including at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

The PPP leader listed the PTI government’s alleged failings at a press conference in Islamabad, asking: “Who is running Pakistan?”

Rehman said the PTI government was “celebrating” having met 21 targets of the FATF’s 27-point action plan, but asked: “Pakistan is still in the grey list, and you are celebrating this and fooling Pakistan’s people and parliament?”

She demanded explanations from ministers who used FATF’s laws to say that Pakistan was exposed only due to the opposition, she said.

She accused the government of having used the FATF legislation for the “witch-hunt” of opposition members and not using the opposition’s cooperation as an opportunity to create consensus.

The senator said even though the opposition was presently supporting the government for the sake of people’s problems, the government was “dividing the parliament and the country” and clashing with the opposition.

Citing inflation and increases in prices of food items, the PPP leader said although inflation was the country’s real issue at the moment, no one was talking about it because the government had entangled everyone in a “war of narratives”.

“Tiger Force will not be able to get rid of problems of the nation. What is their mandate? Will you unleash them onto the public?” she asked, adding that the country could not be run through “force and threats”.

Rehman also lashed out at the government for allegedly failing to take action against the persons responsible for the wheat and sugar crises and allowing them to go abroad. “NAB (National Accountability Bureau) is for us only, of course,” the PPP leader added sarcastically.

The government was sowing confusion regarding the availability of wheat in the country even though mills run by persons close to the government were allegedly involved in hoarding, she added.

The PPP leader slammed the prime minister for Pakistan’s “democracy & human rights suffering”, stating that unemployment was at an all-time high.

The government has been increasing the prices of medicines to fulfill the demands of multinational companies, while the power sector’s circular debt is sky-rocketing, Rehman added.

She also said the government had not done enough to highlight the annexation of Indian-occupied Kashmir.

“The federal government is not willing to give the deserving share of the NFC Award that would increase the funds and resources so that there can be an improvement in the lives of its people, “she added.

The PPP leader also said that whenever a country, having a presidential system or a parliamentary one, faces disaster the entire nation becomes one and manages resources to assist each other.

She further said that the incompetent Prime Minister has failed to fulfill his promises of making Pakistan a corruption-free country. “Today, the entire nation is on one page that ‘selected’ Imran Khan has to go. He has destroyed the democracy and economy,” Rehman remarked.
