Global COVID-19 death toll surges past 190,000

New York: The global death toll from the coronavirus has climbed over 190,000.

More than 2.7 million declared cases have been registered in 210 countries since the epidemic first emerged in China in December. Of these cases, at least 936,996 are now considered recovered.

In the United States, nearly 849,092 cases were confirmed, including more than 50,000 deaths. The US reported an increase of 2,325 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Italy, which recorded its first coronavirus death at the end of February, has 25,549 fatalities, with 464 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours.

Spain has recorded 22,157 fatalities with 440 in a single day and 208,389 infections. China excluding Hong Kong and Macau has to date declared 4,632 deaths and 82,798 cases, with 77,207 recoveries.

France has reported 516 deaths in a single day, taking the tally to 21,856 deaths and 159,877 cases. The United Kingdom has reported 449 deaths during the last 24 hours, 18,100 fatalities, and 133,495 infections.

Meanwhile, the death toll is 5,391 in Iran as a confirmed number of cases is almost 85,996. The confirmed coronavirus cases jumped to 23,077 as the death toll rose to 718 in India. 

The total number of cases in New Zealand is 1451, and more than 1000 people have recovered from the illness. The country has moved to two weeks of lockdown until 28th April, and people will start returning to their workplaces if they can maintain social distancing measures.
