ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said that construction of Islamabad’s new model prison has been completed and that the prime minister will inaugurate the facility soon. Following the inauguration, prisoners from the federal capital will be transferred to the new prison in phases.
Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Naqvi said the facility had been equipped with modern amenities and would be run as a model prison. He added that it could accommodate between 3,000 and 4,000 inmates.
Asked whether Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan would also be transferred to the new facility, Naqvi said all prisoners in Islamabad would be moved there. He clarified that the plan covered all prisoners in the federal capital, rather than any individual in particular.
Responding to a question about the presence of drugs in prisons, the interior minister said the new facility would be made exemplary in every respect, with strict administrative supervision and monitoring.
Naqvi also said he could not guarantee that every prisoner would leave the facility as a better person. However, he added that efforts could be made to improve inmate monitoring and prison administration.
He reiterated that the prison would become operational after the prime minister’s inauguration, after which the process of transferring prisoners from Islamabad would begin.
