ISLAMABAD: The federal government is expected to hold a key meeting at the Prime Minister’s House today to review the political and law-and-order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), with possible constitutional measures, including the imposition of an emergency or governor’s rule, likely to be discussed.
According to sources, a meeting was also held late last night under the chairmanship of the prime minister, attended by senior ministers and top security officials. Reports prepared by national security and intelligence agencies were reviewed during the meeting.
Sources said a proposal to impose an emergency in 12 districts of KP, including the former tribal districts, was also under consideration. The federal government is consulting relevant political and administrative stakeholders on the matter.
The upcoming meeting is also expected to review possible measures under Articles 232 to 234 of the Constitution. However, no final decision on imposing an emergency or governor’s rule has been confirmed so far.
With the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government continuing to hold office in KP, consultations are ongoing at the federal level over possible steps. Attention is now focused on whether political reconciliation can resolve the situation or the federal government will move towards a constitutional measure.
