Ottawa: The authorities in Canada’s British Columbia province have taken legal action against OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) research company, in connection with a shooting incident at an educational institution.
According to foreign media reports, the lawsuit alleges that highly dangerous and concerning activities had been recorded on the suspect’s ChatGPT account. Despite this, the AI company allegedly did not promptly inform law enforcement authorities or the police about the activity.
OpenAI, meanwhile, has expressed deep sorrow and regret over the tragic incident. In its response, the company said that at the time, it did not have clear and conclusive evidence of any potential or imminent attack that would have warranted a prior warning to law enforcement.
The legal action has once again raised serious questions in the technology sector about AI ethics, user safety, corporate responsibility, and systems designed to identify potentially dangerous behavior in a timely manner.
