Islamabad: Norwegian telecommunications giant Telenor is reportedly considering another significant step towards its complete withdrawal from Pakistan by exploring the potential sale of its controlling stake in Easypaisa Bank.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the company is evaluating options for the sale of its majority shareholding in Easypaisa. Sources familiar with the matter said that if a transaction is completed, it would effectively end all of Telenor’s remaining business interests in Pakistan.

Telenor completed the sale of its mobile telecommunications operations, Telenor Pakistan, to the PTCL Group for approximately Rs108 billion (around $385 million) last year. However, Easypaisa was not included in that transaction and has remained one of Pakistan’s leading digital financial services platforms.

Financial results indicate a strong improvement in Easypaisa’s performance. For the quarter ended 31 March 2026, the company reported a profit after tax of Rs1.49 billion, with earnings per share of Rs2.47. Pre-tax profit reached Rs3.66 billion during the same period, representing a 4.4-fold increase compared with the corresponding quarter last year.

The report stated that Telenor has engaged Citigroup to explore a potential sale of its 55 per cent stake in Easypaisa. Sources indicated that the shareholding could be valued at several hundred million dollars.

According to Bloomberg, the company may invite preliminary bids from potential buyers in the coming months. However, discussions remain at an early stage and no final decision has yet been made.

The remaining stake in Easypaisa is held by Ant Group, one of the world’s largest digital financial services groups.
