Idris Elba finally responds to claims that he could be the new James Bond in the upcoming 007 movie, saying he was never in contention for the part.
The Wire and Sonic the Hedgehog star responded to ongoing fan theories and media reports during a recent interview with People, where he clarified that despite years of rumors linking him to the legendary spy franchise, he was never seriously considered, and never saw himself as a candidate.
Elba’s name has circulated in Bond discussions for more than 15 years, making him one of the most frequently fan-cast actors for the role.
“My name’s not getting thrown out, no way,” Elba said. “They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck in the world. I can’t wait, it’s going to be amazing.”
He added: “I’m honestly not in the race ever. I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”
The next James Bond film is currently in development under Amazon MGM, with director Denis Villeneuve attached to the project. Casting is reportedly being overseen by Nina Gold, known for her work on major franchises including Star Wars and Game of Thrones. However, no official announcement has been made regarding who will succeed Daniel Craig as the next 007.
