Following Eid al-Adha sacrifices, many people become concerned about how to preserve meat without refrigeration so that it can be used for several days.
In Pakistan and other Asian countries, Muslims are fulfilling the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) by sacrificing animals in the name of Allah.
Various traditional household methods are commonly used to preserve meat, while in modern times refrigerators and deep freezers are considered essential for this purpose. This is also why the sale of refrigerators and deep freezers tends to increase before Eid al-Adha.
If you wish to preserve sacrificial meat for a longer period and continue using it over time, the following methods may help keep the meat safe for up to two months.
Tips for preserving meat
1. Avoid washing the meat before freezing
Do not wash sacrificial meat before placing it in the freezer. Moisture on the meat can encourage bacterial growth, which may cause the meat to spoil more quickly.
2. Lightly cook the meat before storage
Partially roast or lightly cook the meat on the stove, then wrap it in aluminium foil before storing it. This method can help preserve the meat for up to two months.
3. Dry the meat naturally if refrigeration is unavailable
Those who do not have access to a refrigerator can cut the meat into small pieces, thread them onto a string, and hang them in sunlight and open air to dry. The dried meat can later be used whenever required.
