Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir has been officially granted British citizenship and issued a passport, making him technically eligible to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
According to media reports, Mohammad Amir had been residing in the UK for a long time with his British-born wife, Nargis Khan, and their children. After completing all legal procedures and the required formalities, he has now formally obtained citizenship.
On Wednesday, Amir shared a post on his official social media account in which a user extended good wishes to him on receiving British citizenship.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed a ban on Pakistani players participating in the IPL. This is why, in the past, Pakistan’s former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood played in the IPL only after obtaining British citizenship.
With his British passport, Mohammad Amir is now technically eligible to play in the IPL. Reports are also circulating that if he receives an IPL offer, he will seriously consider participating.
It is worth noting that Mohammad Amir has expressed his desire to play in the IPL multiple times.
During a podcast, when Amir was asked whether he would choose the PSL or IPL if their schedules clashed in the future, he clearly stated that after obtaining British citizenship, he would prioritize playing in the IPL and, if that opportunity did not arise, he would participate in the PSL.
Amir retired from international cricket for the second time in 2024. In the recent PSL season, he represented the new franchise Rawalpindi.
