Following the implementation of the new Ajrak design number plate policy, vehicle owners in Karachi have faced difficulties, particularly now that the traffic police have launched a crackdown on vehicles still using old or unregistered number plates. As a result, a large number of people are attempting to obtain the new plates for their cars and motorcycles.
Why is the new number plate?
According to Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation, Mukesh Kumar Chawla, the new number plates are essential for security reasons. He said the Sindh government initiated the “Safe City Project” in 2018, under which 12,000 CCTV cameras have been installed across Karachi.
The minister emphasized that unless vehicles are registered in the name of the actual owner, it is not possible to effectively control crime in the city.

- White: Private vehicles and bikes
- Yellow: Commercial vehicles

How to Apply Online
- Visit: (https://taxportal.excise.gos.pk/home/quick_pay)
- Select your vehicle type: “Two Wheeler” or “Four Wheeler”
- Enter your mobile number and vehicle registration number (make sure all motor vehicle taxes are paid)
- Enter the captcha code
- Click on “Vehicle Details”
- Select your nearest Excise branch
- Click on “Calculate Amount”
- Choose “Deliver challan to me via courier”
- Fill in your name, address, and other required information
- A 12-digit PSID number will be generated (you’ll also receive it via SMS)
- Pay the fee via bank, ATM, Easypaisa, or online banking
You will be given a set of instruction following submission of challan. It usually take about three months to get your new number plates. You will need to return your old number plate when collecting the new one.
