A pinkeye (conjunctivitis) outbreak has hit Punjab, with state-run hospitals across the province reporting around 900 cases in the last 24 hours.
Reports indicate that Jhang has seen 106 cases, Multan 93 cases, Bhakkar 83 cases, DG Khan 41 cases, and Lahore 11 cases in the past day.
Additionally, public hospitals in Punjab have reported a total of 13,473 cases of pinkeye over the last 30 days. According to the Punjab Health Department, the incidence of pinkeye infection has decreased by up to 5 percent this year, attributed to the recent monsoon rains.
Last year, over 288,000 cases of pinkeye were reported from January to September 2023.
Pinkeye is a common, self-limiting condition that affects the lining of the eyelid and eyeball. It is treatable at any stage. The infection can spread easily through contact with contaminated surfaces, close contact with infected individuals, and even through conversations.
Those with pinkeye should wear sunglasses, and separate their bedding and utensils immediately. Doctors have advised those affected to isolate themselves to prevent further spread of the infection.
