LAHORE: Smog has once again affected various areas of the city as the rank of Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached 371.
The AQI in Gulberg was recorded 651, in areas around Punjab Assembly, it was 646, Upper Mall at 458, Sundar Industries recorded 437, Zeenat Block observed 414, and Askari Heights witnessed AQI at 337.Â

The AQI of Lahore has witnessed a sudden spike since the start of November. Smog was observed in the bordering areas of Lahore and those in the south along the canal.

For the past 4 years, smog, rightly being called the fifth season of Lahore, has deprived the people of sunshine and dusk-hour charm as layers of toxic smoke engulf horizon from November to February. Government officials blame the smog on crops being burned in India.

Lahore has been ranked as the second most polluted city in the world, which records air pollution levels across the globe.Â

An AQI ranking between 301-500 is classified as hazardous. If it increases from 200, its environment becomes very unhealthy, it may cause serious health issues.
If the rank increases from 300 to 500, it causes real hazards, indicating the warning of an emergency.

The smog is caused by a lack of rain and immense pollution. Smoke from vehicles, factories, and burning of the remains of crops could one of the major factors behind the dense smog.
Health experts have advised people, especially children and the elderly, to remain indoors and take more liquids.
