PTI’s Long March

Shahid Shahnawaz by Shahid Shahnawaz

As soon as Imran Khan became Prime Minister in 2018, the oppositions parties started agitation against his government, which gained momentum with the passage of time, and then Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari marched towards Islamabad with an ‘army’ of political activists.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) created a similar situation against the current government soon after it came into power, and started agitation across the country. Now once again PTI supremo Imran Khan has directed his party to start preparations for a long march towards Islamabad. After Imran Khan’s directions PTI has accelerated preparations for the long march. In this regard, a high level PTI meeting with Imran Khan on chair was held yesterday.

Besides this, PTI chief has specially called the party district presidents and general secretaries from across Punjab and Pakhtunkhwa for meeting to assign them special responsibilities regarding the expected long march.

Even though the date of the long march has not been revealed yet, it has become clear that neither Imran Khan can bear his opponents in the government, nor his political rivals are ready to tolerate him in the power.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman is accused of using seminaries students for his politics and taking them to Islamabad for long march. Similarly, PTI accused Bilawal Bhutto Zardari of giving Rs.2 thousand each to the poor people of Sindh to participate in his long march against the government in the beginning of the year. On the other hand, some similar allegations were also made against Imran Khan and his party by opponent parties including PPP, PML-N and JUI-F.

In fact, due to the politics of self-interest, accusations and misunderstandings, Pakistan has reached such a point that nowadays there are rumors that country is going towards defaulting and Sri Lanka-like situation.

Unfortunately, In Pakistan no prime minister including Imran Khan was allowed to complete his five years tenure. First opponent parties toppled Imran Khan’s government and did not let him to complete his tenure and now PTI want to send PM Shehbaz Sharif home as soon as possible, and for this purpose early general elections is being demanded.

Pakistan is not a small country, our population has exceeded 22 million. So, holding general elections here means spending billions of rupees, for which the present government is not ready.

On the other hand, Imran Khan is bent on calling a long march against the government and announcement of the final date is expected soon. It is clear that PTI long march would badly affect the already fragile economy of the country. In this situation government should do its best to forbid Imran Khan to call the long march. Starting dialogues on the issue of early polls and others matter is the best way to avoid political anarchy in the country.
