ISLAMABAD:The PIMS fire tragedy has claimed yet another vulnerable life, as a newborn boy known affectionately as Ali passed away after battling for survival in the intensive care unit.
Abandoned Child Named by Nurses
Hospital staff revealed that the baby’s mother and grandmother had abandoned him at PIMS shortly after his birth two months ago.
For days, he was identified only by a “Baby H” tag before nurses, moved by his plight, lovingly named him Ali. His condition deteriorated last week, and despite being shifted to the ICU, he could not survive.
Body Handed Over to Edhi Centre
Declared unclaimed, Ali’s body was handed over to the Edhi Centre, which arranged his burial. Staff members described the child’s death as a heartbreaking reminder of the human toll of the tragedy, which has already shaken the nation.
Background of Inquiry and Delayed Report
It may be recalled that the August 26 nursery fire at PIMS’ Mother and Child Health ward had earlier claimed 14 newborn lives.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a high‑level inquiry committee headed by former Interior Secretary Shahid Khan, tasked with reviewing CCTV footage, duty rosters, and staff statements.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and Health Minister Mustafa Kamal had assured Parliament that the preliminary report would be released within days, but it remains pending. The delay has fueled public frustration, with grieving families demanding accountability and transparency.
