Once upon a time, high-speed internet in Pakistan was considered a madman’s dream, but today, a child has a mobile phone in his hand and a high-speed internet in it, and there is a fear that immoral content on the internet can spil the new breed.
When there were talks about bringing the Internet to Pakistan, Professor Dr. Attaur Rehman, who was the Minister of Information Technology from 2000 to 2002, said that the Internet is a new technology and every technology has positive and negative effects and implications. It is our duty as a nation to move towards positive effects.
But then what happened was what was feared that the name of the Pakistani nation started to be taken among those who search for immoral content on Google. However, with the passage of time, Pakistanis opened online shops and through other sources including YouTube channels became a dangerous exchange for Pakistan.
Despite this, the internet has been disturbed by the presence of obscene content, pictures and videos on the internet, but a positive development is that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is taking action to prevent illegal content.
Yesterday, a report of PTA’s action against illegal content on social media platforms came out. According to the document, PTA has blocked more than 1,135,000 social media IDs.
A total of more than 12 lakh complaints were received by PTA to prevent illegal content. The highest number of 134,000 complaints were received against Facebook posts. More than 112 thousand fake IDs were blocked on Facebook.
Similarly, PTA received 65 thousand 122 complaints from Pakistani social media users against immoral videos on TikTok, on which 63 thousand immoral videos were blocked.
It is important to clarify here that PTA has not only taken action against offensive material but also foiled a negative campaign on defamation of Pakistan’s national institutions, especially the Pakistan Army, Police and other law enforcement agencies.
There is a need for today’s social media users to follow the laws of the country while using any social media platform including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TikTok and not to promote any kind of offensive or immoral content.
Our young generation must understand that the internet is not only for entertainment and if you use it for entertainment only, stay away from offensive content, videos and images, otherwise, PTA and FIA can also take action against you.
