The world is marking World Radio Day today, celebrating one of humanity’s oldest yet most trusted communication platforms.

First proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 and later adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, the date commemorates the launch of United Nations Radio in 1946.

Theme 2026: Radio and Artificial Intelligence

This year’s theme, “Radio and Artificial Intelligence,” focuses on how emerging technologies are reshaping broadcasting , from production to audience engagement.

Broadcasters worldwide are increasingly using AI tools for.

  • Automated transcription
  • Real-time translation across languages
  • Smarter content distribution
  • Faster newsroom workflows

However, international media bodies stress transparency and editorial responsibility, emphasizing the slogan: “AI is a tool, not a voice.” The message underscores that while machines can assist, credibility still depends on human judgment and ethical journalism.

Accessibility and innovation

According to UNESCO, ethical AI adoption can significantly improve access to information, especially for people with hearing and visual impairments, without replacing the human connection that builds listener trust.

Why radio still matters

Despite the dominance of smartphones and social media, radio continues to be the world’s most widely consumed medium.

Accessibility: Around 75% of households in developing countries can receive radio signals, making it crucial during disasters when electricity or internet services fail.

Diversity: It provides a platform for remote and marginalized communities often absent from mainstream media.

Trust: Many audiences still consider radio a more reliable source of verified information compared to unregulated online content.

A medium that adapts, not fades

Experts say radio’s survival lies in its adaptability from transistor sets to FM, digital streaming, and now AI-assisted broadcasting. The technology may evolve, but the essence remains unchanged: a human voice delivering credible information.

As broadcasters worldwide celebrate the day, the message is clear: the future of radio will be powered by technology but trusted by people.
