WASHINGTON: The United States has made it clear that it has no position on the internal affairs of Pakistan, the imprisonment of the founder of PTI is a matter for the Pakistani government.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller was asked during a press briefing about Pakistani Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed’s claim that the US is working with Pakistan to end the imprisonment of the former prime minister.
Answering this question, he said, “No, we do not take any position on these issues.” These are matters that the government of Pakistan has to decide.
In response to another question about the security situation in Pakistan, he said “Pakistan has suffered a lot at the hands of terrorists.”
He added, “We regret the loss of life and injuries and extend our heartfelt condolences to those affected by this terrorist attack are committed to working with Pakistan to counter the common threat posed by terrorist groups across the region.”
Talking about the treatment of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, the spokesman asked the Pakistani authorities to respect the no-return advisory. “We are in close and constant communication with the Government of Pakistan regarding the security of individuals in the US immigration and resettlement corridors,” he added.
He said, “We will continue to work together with the government of Pakistan to remove the problems and concerns. It is in the interest of both our countries to ensure the safe and effective resettlement of these people.”
“We will continue to encourage Afghanistan’s neighbors, including Pakistan, to respect the no-return advisory and coordinate with international humanitarian organizations to provide humanitarian assistance and security screening, given the dire situation in Afghanistan,” he stated.
