The father of Hind Rajab, the 6-year-old Palestinian girl whose tragic death highlighted the suffering of Gaza’s children at the international level, has been ‘killed’ by the Israeli military.
According to Palestinian journalist Ashraf Mashharawi, Hind’s mother received a text message informing her that her husband had been killed in an Israeli attack. Mashharawi had recently spoken with Hind’s mother about the tragic events.
Who was Hind?
Hind was traveling in a car with her uncle, his wife, and their four children, fleeing the fighting in the Tel Al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza City, when they came under Israeli fire on January 29. Trapped in the bullet-riddled vehicle and surrounded by her dead relatives, Hind called emergency services, pleading for help for over three hours, as an Israeli tank appeared to be closing in.
In a heart-wrenching recording released by the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Hind can be heard saying, “Come take me. Will you come and take me? I’m so scared, please come!”
Two first responders, Yousef Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun, were dispatched to rescue Hind, but contact with them and the little girl was soon lost. On February 10, the bodies of Hind and her relatives were discovered in the car, just meters away from a burned-out ambulance containing the remains of the two paramedics.
Israel has been attacking the civilian population in Gaza after the October 7 attack that has resulted in deaths of over 35,000 people.
